Dear Friends of the Institute,

In recent days, we heard some wonderful news from across the Atlantic. Susan Athey, a professor at Harvard University, has been nominated as the 2007 John Bates Clark medalist. The John Bates Clark medal is given by the American Economic Association once every two years to “that American economist under the age of forty who is adjudged to have made a significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge”. Its recipient list is extremely prestigious, and the Clark medal is widely considered as a first step to the Nobel.

This is not the place to summarize Susan’s many achievements, but I think that, in an area where many people bemoan the fact that economists are becoming extremely specialized, the American Economic Association has chosen to reward a complete economist, whose contributions extend from high theory to applications and policy work.

Now, you may ask, why is this good news for the Institute? Well, because Susan is a good friend of the Institute and a not infrequent visitor. Her last visit was in January when she gave the fourth Toulouse Economic Lectures. These annual lectures, which are organized with the support of the Town of Toulouse and Princeton University Press, provide a venue for original surveys of current work by leading economists. Susan provided us with a wonderful survey of dynamic contract theory. She is also an active member of the Toulouse Network for Information Technology.

We are very proud of the fact that the best economists in the world find it worthwhile to come to Toulouse and to work with us, and more than that we enjoy it.

Jacques Crémer

PS: Steven Berry from Yale University will present the 2007 Toulouse Lectures in Economics on empirical models of product differentiation and Narayana Kocherlakota will present the 2008 lectures.

Meet the researchers of IDEI

THOMAS-OLIVIER LEAUTIER

You have been nominated Associate Professor at the University Toulouse I Sciences Sociales last autumn, could you please introduce yourself?

After my PhD at the department of economics at MIT, I decided to join McKinsey and Company, a management consulting firm. This provided me with a direct experience of "real life" economics: microeconomics, strategy, firm's organization, etc. I found it a highly valuable experience. I think I now have a better understanding of where academic research is helpful, and how/where it can be impactful. I also realized how many facts, figures, data are available, and how critical they are to any research effort.

After six years with McKinsey, I joined Alcan, a leading aluminium and packaging company, to setup the risk management group. There, I saw a large successful corporation from the inside. I also got a richer understanding of real risk management issues.

I feel now ready to come back to academic research.  I am finishing a book on risk management, where I summarize what I learnt and practiced over the last few years. I hope it will be a bridge between academic research and practitioners' needs. In parallel, we have a few risk management research projects with other IDEI researchers: from the highly mathematical to the data-oriented. I am also starting a research project on electric power transmission. That was the topic of my PhD ten years ago. Finally, we have a project on loyalty versus competence within firms.

As director of the executive MBA program, what do you think about its future?

The eMBA is a great opportunity for all parties involved. I feel TSE will not be successful in the long-term without a strong continuous education program: besides incremental financing, it provides closer links to the business world, hence exposure to real issues faced by firms and their managers, and increases the reputation of Toulouse School of Economics in the business community. For potential participants, it is simply a fabulous arbitrage: world class teaching in Toulouse! We have built a very strong team, with Toulouse School of Economics, l’Institut d’Administration des Entreprises, and external faculty. I am confident it will be a resounding success!
